Production Studios, Companies Combine to Push for Sustainability Within Unscripted TV

The entertainment industry’s push to increase sustainability in unscripted television took a significant step forward after 30 production studios and companies lent their support to the cause. Reality of Change founder Cyle Zezo and Ellis Watamanuk, senior director at Rare’s Entertainment Lab, first launched the formal initiative to increase sustainability in unscripted TV two months ago and held the first committee meeting in late May.

After spending weeks seeking support within the entertainment industry, nonprofit organization RARE and ecoentertainment company Reality of Change rounded up 30 production companies and studios to help build an advisory committee to begin coming up with climate-change solutions in the entertainment industry. Some of the companies involved in working on the advisory committee include Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Blind Nil, Scout Productions and MGM Alternative.

Watamanuk and Zezo lead several committee meetings throughout the year to start laying down a plan of action to help unscripted television producers set achievable climate goals and achieve tangible results as they strive to achieve sustainability behind and in front of the camera. Representatives from major production houses such as the Intellectual Property Corporation at Sony Pictures Television as well as successful indie producers such as Scout Productions will be involved in crafting solutions to address sustainability in unscripted TV.

According to Watamanuk, the advisory committee has several decades’ worth of experience, and its members have produced some of the world’s most popular unscripted TV. Consequently, the Entertainment Lab senior director noted that the committee was well equipped to blaze a path for the industry’s sustainability journey. He observed that the participation and active engagement the committee members bring will help to lay a robust foundation and create a clear road map for the unscripted TV industry to make real and tangible progress.

Watamanuk added that the task force’s goal will be to focus on what the unscripted television segment can achieve in the near future while also identifying the resources and data the sector can use to achieve its environmental goals in the long-term before issuing a report once the process is complete.

Zezo added that the group recruited unscripted TV creators across the entire entertainment industry, choosing creators from the largest producers to the smallest indie houses to ensure the advisory committee produces diverse solutions and ideas to the industry’s climate-change problems. The unscripted television industry was receptive to the initiative’s call for action, Zezo said, and is eager to help push sustainability in the sector.

Companies with interests in the TV and radio production industry, such as Momo Inc. (NASDAQ: MOMO), are embracing a variety of measures to take leadership in driving change for the better on matters of sustainability, accountability and fairness.
